Roberto Tapia (Bucho) was
first exposed to Capoeira on
a visit to Salvador da
Bahia, Brazil in 1995. When
he returned to his home in
Santiago , Chile , he
trained for almost 2 years
with Cacao Pereira, a
Brazilian capoeirista who
lived in Chile . In 1997,
Bucho made his second trip
to Brazil —one of the most
poignant experiences of his
life—traveling to Rio de
Janeiro, Bello Horizonte,
and Porto Seguro, among
other cities. He also
visited the academies of
Mestre Mao Branca (Capoeira
Gerais) and Mestre Railson
(the founder of Capoeira Sul
da Bahia) in Arraial d'Ajuda
and trained extensively with
capoeiristas from these
areas.
In 1997, Roberto began
training with Contra-Mestre
Maxuel Moreira, a young and
talented Capoerista who
would go on to teach in
Chile for almost ten years
and who currently teaches in
Paris , France . Roberto
returned to Brazil in 1999,
training in Capoeria Sul da
Bahia academies in Porto
Seguro and Arraila d'Ajuda,
gaining more experience and
improving his Capoeira
techniques. Also during this
trip, Roberto had the honor
of visiting the Joao Pequeno
Angola Center in Salvador ,
Bahia .

In 2003, Roberto traveled
once again to Arrail d 'Ajuda
to participate in the 1er “Encontro
Internacional de Capoeira
Sul da Bahía” (First
International Encounter of
Capoeira Sul da Bahía), a
grand event that brought
together hundreds of
Capoeiristas from around the
world to train together.
Roberto had the honor of
participating in the Third
International Encounter in
July 2007, further
perfecting his skills as a
Capoeirista and a teacher.
Roberto's dedication to
Capoeira is best exemplified
through his advancement of
belts. In 2000, he received
the Verde-Amarello
(Green-Yellow) belt,
becoming a capoeirista
graduado (graduated capoeira
student), and in 2001, he
received a 4th belt, Verde-Amarello
Duas Voltas (Double
Green-Yellow). Roberto
received the Cordell Amarelo
(Yellow Belt), advancing to
the status of Monitor in
2006.
Teaching Experience
Roberto began teaching
Capoeira in 1999 at the
University Diego
Portales in Santiago ,
Chile and at
“Universidad Central de
Chile”, along with
various gyms and
cultural centers. Upon
arriving in the United
States in 2005 he began
teaching in Rockville,
Maryland and Washington,
DC where in a matter of
one year was able to
grow his Capoeira group
to include over 50
adults and children.
In 2006 Roberto
organized the First Sul
da Bahia Batizado in
which his students
received their first
belts. Mestre Railson
from Brazil and
Professor Chin from
Santa Barbara officiated
the event which included
over 50 participants. In
October 2007 Roberto
organized the Second Sul
da Bahia Batizado, in
which Contra-Mestre
Maxuel from France and
Mestre Railson from
Bahia-Brazil both
officiated. This event
included over 70
participants/capoeristas
from all over the east
coast. Apart from the
Batizados, Roberto
organizes workshops with
visiting Capoeira
professionals to enhance
the training of his
students.
Roberto was pleased to
began teaching Capoeira
in American University
in September 2007 and in
University of Maryland
in February
2008.Currently, the
groups in Washington and
at the Universities are
extremely active and
growing in number. They
hold regular classes and
undertake new projects
and performances.
Roberto instills the
same techniques, energy,
and enthusiasm in his
students that his own
professor passed on to
him. He hopes to provide
his students with high
quality classes that
enhance their love of
Capoeira.
